How to inseminate at home as the recipient

  1. Perform the procedure as soon as you get the sample..Open the box and carefully remove all the layers of wrap until you get to the syringe. Keep it inside its blue sterile pouch, at room temperature for 20 minutes. As a reminder, the standard extender used by clinics, TYB, is made from chicken egg yolk, so don’t be alarmed by the yellowish color.

  2. Go to the bathroom to ensure you won’t have to go during the procedure; wash your hands after with soap, rinse thoroughly and remove all soap residue and dry your hands completely.

  3. Remove the syringe from its pouch. Don’t sterilize the syringe with anything as this kills sperm; the syringe and the pouch itself are already sterile.

  4. Lie on your back with your hips elevated by 2 firm pillows.

  5. Remove the red cap, screwing to the left, ensuring you don’t accidently move the plunger in. Don’t touch the tip of the syringe to avoid contamination.

  6. Gently invert the syringe once or twice to mix the sample. Don’t shake it

  7. Don’t use lubricant/lotion/saliva for this step; they reduce sperm motility. Insert the syringe as deep as possible without causing discomfort and aim the tip towards your tailbone.

  8. Slowly depress the plunger to release the sample, taking 7-10 seconds. Leave the syringe in for another 15 seconds after.

  9. Remove syringe slowly, and ensure the plunger stays pushed in, so as to not “vacuum” any of the sample

  10. Stay as still as possible in the reclined position with your hips elevated for 15 minutes

  11. Cross your fingers, say a prayer to the fertility gods, and let biology do its thing.
